Personality

Shana is quite the independent girl, or at the very least tries to act like she is. She is definitely able to be more independent than the girl Dart left behind five years ago, as she was able to survive being put in Hellena Prison, as well as easily stole a bow and some arrows to fight alongside Dart and Lavitz. Shana is not planning to be a burden that has to depend on others to protect her and save her. She makes that clear right away when Dart tells her to stand back and she refuses. Shana is also not afraid to say what is on her mind either, which becomes evident when she starts saying things like “Excuse me, you guys! Don’t leave me like that!” Or how easily she can tell Dart her feelings for him so many times even when he does not say anything in return until the very last time. Shana is also filled with an incredible determination to find out about the mystery surrounding her, and plans to discover the truth with all the strength that she can muster and the help of her friends. She may have some “weak” moments, but Shana is actually quite strong. Even despite all the hardships she goes through on their journey, she is able to keep up and fight alongside everyone else. Shana is also strong enough to accept that she cannot be as physically powerful as Rose, and knows her own limits. When she tries to act strong like Rose within the Dragon’s nest, she eventually gives in knowing that she cannot stand firm and act like the poison has no affect on her. I would have considered her weak if she tried to act like nothing was wrong the whole time and kept faltering while doing so. Sometimes it is harder to admit defeat than carry on through.

If nothing else, one must accept the fact that Shana is incredibly considerate and kind. She is willing to do anything that she can, or trying something that she may not be able to do, in order to aid or protect those people she cares about. Her kindness does not stop there, however, as it extends to people she does not even know. Shana had no idea who Lavitz was, but was quick to take care of his injuries and wanted him to take it easy and not push himself too much because he was hurt. Shana also worries for all the people in Seles, hoping that they are doing okay, and blames the injuries and deaths on herself because the invaders really only wanted to take her away. Shana does not only wish to accompany Dart and Lavitz to stay by Dart’s side, as she also cannot stand the idea of war, where so many lives are lost and even more people are injured. Of course not many people are actually pushing for war in the game, but that fact only adds to Shana’s genuine kindness. Shana also worries about being a burden to her friends and other people because she does not want to drag them down. She is concerned that since she cannot fight like Rose and cannot turn into a Dragoon that she is of no use to Dart and the others and asks if she should have just remained in the castle. Obviously that is not what she wanted to do, as she wished to be near Dart’s side, but her “weak moment” displayed that she did not want to be a bother or have people go out of their way to do things for her. Shana becomes even more concerned when more strange things begin to happen concerning her mysterious power, and blames herself for putting Dart and the others in danger as well as harming the people in Seles. Shana really only wants to help people, and even the slight thought of hurting someone else would give her enough motive not to do or act on something.

I myself have a hard time not thinking of Shana as a young girl sometimes, only because I am used to her being treated that way by Dart for a good portion of the game. When I heard her voice in battle and noticed how much deeper it was than what I had imagined, I was slightly surprised. But then I reminded myself that Shana is indeed an adult, and even if she seems immature with some things that she says, she is quite the opposite. Out of all the women in the party until maybe Miranda takes her place, Shana almost adopts a mother-like figure because of her kindness, wisdom and ability to be mature. She even chastises Meru a few times for acting childish and tells her to act more her age.

Overall, Shana is a very kind woman who has grown up considerably and is able to take care of herself. She still knows she cannot shoulder everything, which is why I think she even has that bit of strength over Rose, because she understands the importance of friends and confiding in them as much as your own power. She is mature and strong-willed, and will not let anything or anyone stand in her way when she wants to get something done.
