Shinidamachuu

The shinidamachuu, also known as dead soul collectors, are what Kikyou depends on to get souls for her body. There are usually some traveling with her, but she never seems to be out of them if some get destroyed. They gather the souls of the dead before they can ascend to heaven and drop them into her body. Souls of dead women who are miserable or sad work the best for her. Kikyou’s body cannot function without being nourished with souls, so they play a crucial role to existence in her new life. Naraku knew this fact and created a giant red shinidamachuu to steal souls from her body in efforts to kill her. So while hers are helpful, enemy shinidamachuu could pose a real problem to Kikyou.

Kikyou is able to summon the shinidamachuu at will and they listen to her every command. The shinidamachuu bond with their owners, and they seem to have a pretty strong bond with Kikyou at that. When she is attacked by a large demonic shinidamachuu sent out by Naraku, her shinidamachuu try to attack it to protect her, even though they are obviously extremely weak. When Naraku has her locked up, a few of them kill the guard and get her out as well. Kikyou also uses the shinidamachuu to gather information for her and they come and report what they know. The shinidamachuu cannot speak as far as it is shown, so their owner must have some sort of communication with them that is not a spoken language.

The shinidamachuu themselves are quite weak individually, but if Kikyou has a few of them, they are able to carry her for quite some distance into the sky. She often leaves Inuyasha in that fashion rather than walking since he would be able to catch her otherwise. Otherwise, they really do not have much physical power and are easily destroyed by Inuyasha and other demons. They also cannot penetrate Naraku’s barrier, so he uses that to his advantage in order to make Kikyou immobile.

Because Inuyasha and Naraku’s groups see Kikyou with her shinidamachuu, both of them often use the shinidamachuu to find Kikyou when they are looking for her…or in Inuyasha’s case, even if he is not. Inuyasha aimlessly follows them countless times, even if they lead him in circles because wherever they go, Kikyou will be. As a result, I suppose it can be concluded that they are not a common demon to be sighted; otherwise both Inuyasha and Naraku would not rely heavily on them to find her.
