Rebirth

Fifty years after Kikyou’s death, her reincarnation, Higurashi Kagome, entered the Feudal era of Japan, once again awakening Inuyasha. In her effort to save the village, Kagome fires one of her sacred arrows at a demon who ends up possessing the Shikon no Tama that was brought back into the world through Kagome’s body, and it ends up shattering. The fragments go all over the land, and now it is up to Kagome and Inuyasha to collect them all before they are used for evil purposes. Unfortunately, many demons and people learn of the jewel shards and want to get their hands on them. The only problem is, there is only one person who can sense the jewel shards. One living person anyway…

An ogress named Urasue hears of the Shikon no Tama being scattered all over the world, and wants some fragments for herself. However, she knows that she cannot sense the jewel shards and needs someone to do so. Not knowing of Kagome, Urasue heads to Kaede’s village to get the deceased Kikyou’s remains as well as soil from her grave. Kaede and some of the villagers attempt to stop her, but she is too powerful for them. The next day, Kaede prepares to leave to get her sister’s remains back, when Inuyasha and Kagome return to the village. Inuyasha reluctantly agrees to accompany Kaede so she does not get killed and they set off to find the person who robbed Kikyou’s grave.

In the meantime, Urasue bakes a human container to make a replica of Kikyou using her bones and soil from her grave. Kikyou rises, and Urasue tells her that she will find the shards of the Shikon no Tama for her. Kikyou just flops over and Urasue realizes that her soul has not returned, meaning that it had to have been reincarnated somewhere else. She tries to take her herb back from Kikyou, but the doll will not let go. Urasue then realizes there are intruders outside and leaves to take care of them. Seeing Kagome’s face, she automatically recognizes her as Kikyou and knows that must be her reincarnation. Urasue kidnaps Kagome and puts her in a pool of strange green liquid. She struggles at first, but then becomes unable to move. The doll of Kikyou manages to dress herself in her old attire and comes out into the sunlight. Inuyasha finally makes it to the area and sees the doll. Her soul pleads for him not to say her name.

But, of course, Inuyasha does and her soul leaves Kagome and goes into Kikyou. Urasue tries again to get Kikyou under her control to find the jewel shards. Kikyou makes her way to Urasue and falls, holding onto her shoulders. The half conscious shrine maiden uses her spiritual power and defeats her in one shot. Kikyou then grabs a bow and starts to fire at Inuyasha. She almost succeeds in killing him, but Kagome gets angry and starts to take her soul back. Kikyou stumbles off, trying to get away from Kagome before she has no life left in her at all. Inuyasha pursues her, and as she almost falls off a cliff, he grabs her hand. Kikyou uses her spiritual power once more and hurts Inuyasha so he would fall with her, but he lets go and she falls herself, looking sad and angry once more.

Kikyou manages to survive because her body is made of clay and bone, and is only living by thriving off the hatred for Inuyasha that she died with. She now must live by using her shinidamachuu to gather the souls of the dead before they ascend to heaven. She spends her new life tending to villages that need protection and healing the sick and injured, just like she did before she died. Soon, she finds who is really responsible for her death and that she and Inuyasha were tricked into hating each other. But, her reincarnation is now in her old place at Inuyasha’s side, and she knows that things can never go back to how they once were.
