ALTERNA     .      the ultimate betrayal of trust

Hijiri-sama

Inuyasha tries hard to find and recover Kikyou’s remains, but he is not able to find any at all. This upsets him, but at least he has the thought that the woman he loved was no longer suffering. After recovering Kagome, the group continues on their journey where they run into Abi-Hime and her merciless blood-sucking birds. She has attacked many villages, and the survivors all try to make it to Hijiri-sama’s village over the mountain. No one knows what Hijiri-sama looks like because she always sits behind a screen and has two others to talk for her, but she is supposed to be extremely powerful. Inuyasha’s group runs into a few of them, but Hakudoushi and Entei attack them. They at first believe that Hijiri-sama was a scheme in order for Abi-Hime to get more blood since survivors of the village raids are headed for her. That only lasts until a sacred arrow is shot from a distant cliff and breaks Hakudoushi’s spell-knot. They all think it may be Kikyou, but Inuyasha goes to grab the arrow in order to make sure. He says it does not smell like her, and the smell is not familiar to him at all. Even so, they decide to pursue Hijiri-sama to make sure.

At the place where the survivors were headed, a small girl is holding up a barrier around many villagers while Abi-Hime is trying to attack them. The masked Hijiri-sama arrives on a horse with another small girl and defeats the birds with ease, so Abi-Hime leaves. The villagers are grateful, but Hijiri-sama and the two small girls leave immediately after. Inuyasha and the others follow leads and rumors and head to a sacred mountain where Hijiri-sama is supposedly located at the present moment. Inuyasha gets separated from the rest and finally meets the cloaked woman and the small girls. Inuyasha demands to know if she is Kikyou and tells her to remove the veil covering her face. The two girls say that she cannot talk and then as he runs up to her, she is destroyed. Inuyasha sees Kikyou’s face for a brief second before it disappears. He then notices Kagura who says Naraku thinks Kikyou is still alive. Inuyasha looks down at a piece of paper that fell out of Hijiri-sama and it is one of those small papers used for puppets. Hijiri-sama was just a puppet.

In the mean time, Kagome was lured to a waterfall by some shinidamachuu, where she sees Kikyou underneath the water. The two girls, who are really Shikigami named Kochou and Asuka, were created by Kikyou to give her time in order to figure out how to heal herself from Naraku’s blow. Hijiri-sama was created to help contain Kikyou’s soul while she was finding a way. They tell Kagome she is the only one who can save Kikyou, because she needs to be purified from Naraku’s miasma. Kagome chooses to save her, and in the process she sees the memory that Kikyou had of the day she died. Kagome realizes that Kikyou’s soul is still stuck in that moment of time and she could not leave the past. Kagome is able to heal the wound all the way, and ends up fainting on top of Kikyou. When she wakes up, Kikyou talks to her and leaves before Inuyasha arrives in order to rest and regain her strength.
