ALTERNA     .      the ultimate betrayal of trust

Finale

After being corrupted by Naraku’s spider webs, Kikyou’s body begins to break down because of his miasma. Kagome cannot purify her because Naraku’s webs also taint her. The only way Kikyou can be saved is if Kagome retrieves a special bow from Mt. Azusa. Inuyasha stays with Kikyou while Kagome goes with Kouga, Miroku, Sango and Shippou to Mt. Azusa. Kikyou tells Inuyasha about the traps and illusions that await Kagome, and explain that is why she is taking so long to get the bow. Inuyasha leaves Kikyou with the others and goes to find Kagome. In the mean time, Naraku comes and kidnaps the group to relocate them. Kikyou realizes it must be because Kagome has managed to get the bow and it would be dangerous for him if they remained near Mt. Azusa.

Naraku holds Kikyou while fighting the others because she is attached to him through his webs. Kikyou has given up hope on her goal of purifying the Shikon no Tama in order to destroy Naraku until she notes that Kouga’s jewel shards are rapidly being purified. She realizes that it must be Midoriko’s will purifying the shards, and then desperately wishes for Naraku to try and take Kouga’s shards.

Inuyasha and Kagome make it to the scene, and Kagome wants to shoot Kikyou with an arrow using the bow like she is supposed to in order to save her, but Kikyou gives her a look telling her to wait. Kagome does not understand, but she does wait anyway. Kouga ends up getting partially absorbed into Naraku, and his legs where the shards were are attached to him. Naraku has dropped Kikyou at this point, and Kagome sees the Shikon no Tama within Kikyou’s body. She takes the opportunity to shoot the arrow and it hits Kikyou’s wound as well as the jewel. Kagome makes it down to Kikyou because she had been held up by her shinidamachuu after Naraku tried preventing Kagome from purifying Kikyou. Kagome notices that the jewel is starting to purify and Naraku is being affected by it. He believes she will not win because she is too weak, but her spiritual power and his miasma are battling within the jewel.

The purification breaks Naraku apart enough for Kouga to escape, but he loses the jewel shards, making the jewel only missing one fragment…the one Kikyou has desperately been trying to protect…the fragment in Kohaku’s back. Kikyou then tells Kagome that the rest is up to her, and that she needs to do all she can to protect Kohaku’s light because she is the only one who can do it. Kagome is confused and tells her not to say such things, but Naraku then yells to Kikyou that she has lost and goes to attack her. Kikyou thinks to herself that he will see who really lost when he dies, and a small glimpse of light is left in the jewel. Kagome shields Kikyou’s body with her own, but Inuyasha saves them both. Naraku taunts Inuyasha by saying there is only one shard left and he will have to fight without Kikyou.

Kagome calls for Inuyasha to hurry to Kikyou, and she feels Kikyou’s hand on her own. Kikyou smiles and tells her that the bow from Mt. Azusa is her own. Sesshoumaru and Kaede both can tell something is wrong, as the direction of the wind has changed and there is a blood red sun setting. Inuyasha asks to be alone with Kikyou and he carries her further into the field to sit down. Kagome is crying and mentally saying sorry to Kikyou over and over for not being able to save her. Kikyou smiles again and thinks to her not to be sad because her soul has been saved. Miroku is also upset because he believes he could have saved Kikyou if he had opened kazanaa earlier, but he was too afraid of death even though she saved him when her body was breaking down. Sango also thinks how at first she hated Kikyou but now she realizes that she would have fought for Kohaku if it came down to it. Kagome is still blaming herself for not having enough power and not getting there sooner.

A little further away from the group, Kikyou finally speaks up and asks Inuyasha if he remembers how they had promised for him to use the jewel in order to become human and then she would become a normal woman. Inuyasha says he could never forget, but she replies that she has finally become a normal woman while smiling. Inuyasha tells her that he was the first woman he ever loved but still could not do anything to save her. He begins to cry, and the tears hit Kikyou’s face. She is still smiling while commenting how she has never seen him cry and says it did not matter because he came for her, and that was good enough. Inuyasha kisses her and Kikyou begins to cry as well. At this point, she is finally free from the weight she was bound to the living world with…the weight that she died with. Her body disappears and her soul rises, meeting the shinidamachuu that have come. Her soul swirls around Inuyasha and then finally Kagome and the others, as if telling them not to be sad. Inuyasha looks at the stars with Kagome behind him…

“Kikyou…won’t suffer anymore…”
