Peace in Death?

Since her resurrection, Kikyou has been traveling the lands, moving from place to place when she feels she can no longer stay at the same village. She knows that Naraku is her enemy, but is filled with almost an arrogant confidence because she believes he could never kill her with the heart of Onigumo still beating within him. Unfortunately, that cocky attitude leads her to a difficult situation.

Inuyasha is within Mt. Hakurei, where Naraku is hiding. Kikyou, who is nearby, notices that something was cast away from the mountain and goes to investigate it. She comes across Hakushin who has a personal barrier around him. He asks if she is also pursuing Naraku, but she does not answer his question. Hakushin comments how Kikyou has a penetrating glance and almost taunts her by asking if she is trying to see his soul. She wants to know why he is so sad, and asks him to take his barrier down. He tells her she cannot save his soul, but she hugs him and tries to find her answer. Kikyou seems to be drawn to those who are sad, and become curious as to why they are. I think she wanted to know because she thought maybe she could identify with his sadness. She tells him that he is not full of hate, but rather that sadness and he is able to finally be at rest. Kikyou watches his soul ascend; rather stunned that she was able to do it after all.

With Hakushin’s soul saved, the barrier around Mt. Hakurei is gone, and Naraku prepares for his new body. While Naraku is fighting Inuyasha, Kikyou stays near the sanctuary outside and notices Kagura leaving while carrying something. She shoots an arrow at Kagura, who just barely dodges it and prepares to attack her back. A voice tells Kagura that she is not the one to take Kikyou down, so she simply leaves wondering what Naraku is up to. Naraku then realizes she is outside and leaves Inuyasha to meet her. Kikyou notices that Mt. Hakurei is collapsing and begins to leave, but Naraku arrives to block her path. Kikyou questions what he is up to and he tells her it was for his new body. She still believes Naraku cannot kill her, and gives him her usual attitude by saying she knows he was doing something. He laughs and tells her that his actual purpose was to kill her.

Naraku knows Kikyou has been confident because of his human heart, but now he lets her know that the heart that has been keeping her alive is now gone. He does not feel a thing after striking her down. Kikyou’s souls begin to leak out of her body where he struck her, and Naraku opens part of the ground where his miasma is located. That, he says, will be her grave. He strikes right through her chest and the force pushes her off the cliff into the miasma pit. She falls with only one thought in her mind…

“Inuyasha…”
