Sora

Serenity is divided into sections based on the two games, and therefore this page only focuses on Kairi’s relationship with Sora in Kingdom Hearts II. If you wish to read about their relationship in Kingdom Hearts first, please go to this page before continuing to read the content below.

The opening to Kingdom Hearts II depicts Kairi continuing to wait for Sora on the shores of Destiny Islands where they were separated at the end of the first game. Much time has gone by, and Kairi still continues to wait for his return. In Chain of Memories, however, all of the memories of Sora and the people connected to him were interfered with, causing Kairi to forget about him. She knows there was another boy who she and Riku used to hang out with, but she cannot remember anything about him. Kairi explains to Selphie that his voice used to remain at the island, but it is no longer there, and she feels really bad about it. Kairi refuses to go to the islands until she remembers everything about him. Roxas’ meeting with Naminé triggers a connection between him and Kairi, and she asks for his name. Sora’s voice is then heard, slightly offended that she cannot remember his name any longer. He gives her a hint saying that it begins with an “S” and Kairi wakes up on the ground next to Selphie. She then runs to the shore and takes out a bottle from her bag. After letting it go in the ocean, she explains that the previous night she wrote a letter to the boy. She remembers they made an important promise, but cannot remember exactly what. Kairi knows in her heart that he will get it some day, and then says his name out loud.

In the meantime, Sora is spending his time trying to find Riku. His memories with Kairi had been replaced with fake memories of wanting to protect Naminé in Chain of Memories, but when he wakes up in Kingdom Hearts II, he remembers her once more. As their time apart increases, Sora begins to think more on his feelings for Kairi. During the second visit to Halloween Town, Sora worries that he never gave Kairi an actual present because she would be happy with anything he gave her, and that made it hard to decide. Goofy reminds him that all she really wanted was to be with him, and for that reason she was like Sally. Sora imagines Jack and Sally dancing as him and Kairi and laughs to himself. His feelings for her have not faded in their years apart.

When Sora finds out that Organization XIII captured Kairi, he immediately starts to pursue them. He finds himself in a similar position as in Kingdom Hearts, because they had been separated and he wants to find her once again to make sure she is safe. Sora is once again ready to put himself on the line in order to save her, and Kairi once more becomes his motivation to continue moving forward and defeat Organization XIII. When the two finally meet again, he simply comments on how much she has changed from when they last saw each other. Kairi then runs up and hugs him, saying how they were really together holding each other. Sora does not respond and just wraps his arms around her, enjoying the feeling of being together once again after so much time. Kairi remains by his side until he and Riku are unable to take Naminé’s portal home with the rest of their friends.

Sora and Riku end up on a beach in the darkness after defeating Xemnas. A bottle with a letter makes their way to them, and Riku gives the letter to Sora, as it is addressed to him. The letter is the one Kairi wrote for him before she came looking for him. He begins to read it out loud,

“Thinking of you, wherever you are.
We pray for our sorrows to end,
and hope that our hearts will blend.
Now I will step forward to realize this wish.
And who knows:
Starting a new journey may not be so hard
or maybe it has already begun.
There are many worlds,
but they share the same sky –
one sky, one destiny.”

The area is then illuminated, as Kairi’s letter has opened the Door to the Light for the two best friends. Kairi is Sora’s light in the worst parts of the darkness. Sora and Riku make their way through, and end up in the waters around Destiny Islands. They finally are able to return home, and Kairi reaches her hand out to Sora. He takes out her lucky charm that he promised to give back to her, and takes her hand with it in his. Sora came back home safe and sound, just as promised. The two would now finally be able to be together every day and take things thrown at them together. Their relationship would never be the same as before their journey started, but it is stronger than ever. At this point, I do not even think Sora and Kairi would need to share the paopu fruit; their destinies and hearts are already connected.
