Loss of Heart
When Kairi was very young, she lived in Hollow Bastion. Ansem sent her away as an experiment to test whether or not she had the power of the seven Princesses of Heart, and she ended up at Destiny Islands the night of a meteor shower. Kairi has no recollection of where she was from once so ever. Sora and Riku are about her age, and the two boys become Kairi’s best friends. Though the three were all very close, Kairi ended up forming the closest bond with Sora. The two used Sora and Riku’s secret hideout to draw and play games in the stone with other rocks. Though it is never said that Riku did not join in, it becomes obvious that Sora and Kairi have a stronger bond later on.At age fourteen, Kairi is enjoying her life on Destiny Islands with her two best friends. She has grown and matured and spends her days hanging out on the islands with the two boys and their other friends. Though not athletically inclined like Sora and Riku, she makes it her job to be a referee between the two and makes up contests to solve their disputes in a peaceful manner. She is happy being there, but the group of friends begins to wonder about other worlds outside Destiny Islands. Thanks to Kairi’s arrival, Riku starts to think about why they were placed in their world as opposed to others and his desire to visit other worlds to find the answers to his questions sparks. Sora, Riku and Kairi decide to make a raft and travel to see other worlds together. Once preparations are completed, they go home for the night, planning to set off the next day.
Unfortunately, things do not go exactly according to plan. A strange storm hits Destiny Islands in the evening, and all three friends go to the set of islands in order to see what the status of their raft is. After a confrontation with Riku, Sora finds Kairi standing motionlessly in their secret hideout behind the waterfall. After calling her name, she slowly turns to look at him and looks lifeless. She says his name softly and the door behind her slams open, sending a huge gust of wind blowing against her. Kairi is thrust forward towards Sora, but when he opens his arms out to catch her, she goes right through him…
All three friends end up being separated, and Riku and Sora meet up first. After feeling like he had been replaced with Sora’s new friends, Riku sets off once again in order to find Kairi. With the help of Maleficent, Riku is able to find her, but soon realizes that she has lost her heart. Kairi is in a trance-like state and is unable to move on her own. She simply stares off into space, and cannot respond to any kind of stimulation. Riku keeps her close to him and searches endlessly for her heart. Sora, also looking for Kairi, is unaware that she is missing her heart until he runs into both Riku and Kairi in Neverland. Riku refuses to let Sora get near Kairi, and puts her in a room with Wendy until they are ready to set sail. When Sora and the others reach a room below where Kairi is, he reaches up towards her. Suddenly, her arm moves a little towards Sora. Her hand twitches a bit more before she is taken away and becomes completely lifeless once again. Finally, Riku, with the help of Ansem, realizes where Kairi’s heart is.
Once Sora arrives at Hollow Bastion, Riku tells him that Kairi’s heart is within Sora’s. Riku wields a Keyblade that can unlock people’s hearts, and plans on using it on Sora in order to free Kairi’s. Sora defeats him, and decides to impale himself with the Keyblade anyway in order for her heart to return to her body. Kairi regains consciousness once her heart becomes part of her body again, and she runs to catch falling Sora. He disappears into points of light before she can catch him, but she refuses to let him go. Ansem approaches her, Donald and Goofy, but the three of them are able to escape once Riku regains control temporarily. After being followed by a Heartless, Kairi realizes that it is really Sora and protects him from being attacked. In doing so, Sora is able to regain his human form, and they go to Traverse Town in order to think of what to do next.
Once Kairi gives in to not being able to go and says she will wait for Sora to return with Riku, she gives Sora her lucky charm in order to make him promise her he will give it back. She knows even though they will be apart again, she is always with him wherever he goes.
After Sora defeats Ansem, he and Kairi are on two small pieces of land elevated in the air. They make a promise that Sora will come back to Destiny Islands as soon as he finds Riku. The two hold on to each other’s hand until they physically cannot, as the ground beneath them begins to get separated. Kairi then finds herself on the beach of Destiny Islands and watches as Sora disappears from view. The islands are then restored to their original form and she wanders around the island. Once inside their secret hideout, Kairi sees the new addition by Sora to their drawings of each other, and is overwhelmed by happiness. He drew her picture of him giving his picture of her a paopu fruit, which implies that he wants their destinies to be entwined forever. Kairi is then shown scratching in the picture of her giving him one back, sealing their relationship and ending the game.
