Sora

Please note that since Serenity is divided into two sections, this page will only look at the relationship between Sora and Kairi in Kingdom Hearts.

Sora and Kairi have a very strong bond that they developed in their early childhood. Sometime after Kairi arrived at their island, the two of them not only bonded with Riku, but strongly with each other. The only scene of them shown together from before the game starts is when they are drawing pictures of each other on the wall to their hideout. But that scene displays they had a strong bond, even at that point in time. Somehow or another, Sora and Kairi built the foundation of a very strong relationship in their childhood.

At the beginning of the game, it is pretty obvious that Sora has feelings for Kairi. While Riku is talking about how it was thanks to Kairi that he began thinking of other worlds, Sora immediately looked over and then just rolled his eyes. When Riku rises the stakes of their race by saying the winner gets to share a paopu fruit with Kairi, Sora gets very nervous and unsure of himself. He knows that he has a chance of losing against Riku because his friend has strong athletic capabilities like himself, and so he obviously does not want Riku to share it with Kairi because of his own feelings for her. The paopu fruit is special because when two people share it, their destinies become intertwined forever. Even though Riku said he was joking, it made Sora think about his relationship with her. He wanders into their secret hideout and looks at the pictures that he and Kairi drew. Sora then sits down and draws the picture of him giving the drawing of Kairi a paopu fruit, sealing that he wants to be with her forever.

When Sora and Kairi are separated, he tries very hard to find her. Though Sora also wants to find Riku, he at least knows that Riku is okay because he eventually runs into him. Finding Kairi is his motivation to keep going on his journey. Finding Kairi is where his strength and determination comes from that allows him to remain a force to be reckoned with on his journey. Though he does not know it, Kairi’s heart is within his own, and that is part of the reason why just the thought of her gave him so much more strength. Sora just wants to find her and make sure she is okay, but he also wants to share with her all the adventures he has been on in search for her and Riku.

Sora and Kairi have a deep connection while he is looking for her because her heart rests within him. Kairi is unable to respond to any kind of stimulus, but when Sora finds her a floor above him in Neverland, he reaches up to her. Though she is not conscious, she knows that he is there. Her hand twitches and begins to move as though she is trying to reach for him as well. Their connection breaks through the fact that her heart is not currently in her body, and that only proves how deep their bond runs.

When Ansem tells Sora that Kairi’s heart is within him, Sora is incredulous. Ansem goes to attack him with the keyblade that can unlock people’s hearts, Sora hears Kairi’s voice call his name in time for him to react and defend himself. He refuses to give Kairi’s heart to him, and fights him in order to protect her heart. However, once Ansem is defeated, Sora knows what he needs to do. He takes the keyblade that Ansem dropped and impales himself with it in order to free her heart, even though he knew his own heart would be released as well. Sora sacrifices his heart in order to bring the girl he loves more than anything back. Kairi wakes up and slowly rises until she realizes Sora is falling. She runs to catch him, but he dissolves into light particles before he touches her arms. Though it seems he is gone forever, Kairi refuses to give him up. She yells that she will not let him go. Kairi believes in Sora, and cares about him too much to just forget about him. Kairi is then able to tell that one of the Heartless is Sora even though they all look alike because they still have a connection, regardless of if he has his heart or not. Kairi tells him that it is her turn to protect him since he is in a position where he cannot fight back easily, and uses her own body to shield him from the attack. Her voice reaches him in the depths of the darkness and brings him back in his human form. Sora tells her that he was stumbling in the darkness, forgetting who he was, his friends, and all sorts of other things. But then he heard her voice, and she was able to bring him back. Kairi is Sora’s light that gives him the strength to fight the darkness.

Once Sora and Kairi go to Traverse Town, they talk in the underground area. Kairi wants to go with Sora in order to get Riku back, but he refuses because it would be too dangerous for her to get involved. She finally gives in but puts something in his hand. She tells him it is her lucky charm and she is letting him borrow it, which means he has to give it back to her. In other words, she is making him promise he has to return to her safely. Kairi is obviously concerned. She does not want him to get injured while fighting, and since she cannot be there with him, she wants to make sure he will come back. He promises that he will, and Kairi reminds him that she is always with him, wherever he is.

After Sora defeats Ansem, he and Kairi make one more promise that he will come back to her after he finds Riku and the King. They hold on to each other for as long as physically possible, but then the island breaks apart and Kairi begins to be lowered down. The two watch each other until Sora is completely out of sight, and she begins to explore Destiny Islands. While walking through their hideout, she looks fondly at the drawings and games all over the wall…until she notices a difference in one picture. Sliding to the ground, Kairi processes that her picture of Sora is giving his picture of her a paopu fruit, and she sees an image of Sora drawing it and turning and smiling at her before disappearing. She smiles to herself and begins to cry out of happiness. Sora wants to be with her forever. Kairi then scratches in her drawing giving his a paopu fruit back, and then she begins her wait for the boy she loves to return home.
