Princess of Heart

As you may or may not know by now, Kairi is the seventh Princess of Heart. Like the title says, each of the seven maidens is the purest of heart, which sets them apart from everyone else. The story of Kingdom Hearts focuses around these seven women, as together they hold the key to unlocking the final keyhole to Kingdom Hearts – Ansem’s ultimate goal. Kairi is therefore “held captive” (though Riku is watching over here) while the other Princesses of Heart are gathered. Kairi is without her heart for majority of the game because it is within Sora’s. When he stabs himself with Ansem’s keyblade, her heart is released and the hearts of the other six princesses are restored as well.

Kairi’s grandmother tells her about light and darkness in a flashback seen by Sora while in Hollow Bastion. While explaining the story of how darkness originally made its way into people’s hearts, she says,
“But small fragments of light survived...in the hearts of children. With these fragments of light, children rebuilt the lost world. It's the world we live in now. But the true light sleeps, deep within the darkness. That's why the worlds are still scattered, divided from each other.

“But someday, a door to the innermost darkness will open. And the true light will return. So, listen, child. Even in the deepest darkness, there will always be a light to guide you. Believe in the light, and the darkness will never defeat you. Your heart will shine with its power and push the darkness away.”
The Princesses of Heart are like the children that rebuilt the new world – light in the face of darkness. Her grandmother stresses that Kairi’s heart has the power of the true light and it will be able to defeat the darkness she will have to conquer. I think it is probably safe to assume that all of the Princesses of Heart have the same true light within them that once existed long ago…
