Hearth and the Home
Destiny Islands is what Kairi considers her true home, even when she cannot remember anything about the place she had lived in previous to living on the islands. She spent a good portion of her life on the islands and made connections with her two best friends Sora and Riku as well as others like Selphie, Tidus and Wakka. Kairi also came to Destiny Islands at a young age, so it is only natural for her to feel connected to the place. Waking up and not remembering anything about her previous home was probably troublesome, if not scary for a young girl such as herself. With no memories of where she came from previously, she had to create new memories with the people and events at Destiny Islands, making it feel more home to her. Kairi also has the person she loves on the group of islands, and the bond she shares with him came from times spent on them. Destiny Islands is more than likely a very important place to her, and she even says that she feels she can always come back no matter what happens to her on their journey. Which is true since Kairi returns to Destiny Islands in order to wait for Sora once her long journey away from home is over. Even after visiting her original home, Kairi still probably considers Destiny Islands home over Hollow Bastion even after seeing it because the set of islands have become the true meaning of home to her. It does not matter where you are born, as home is the place where you feel comfortable and where you have shared memories with the people important to you.
Kairi is actually from Hollow Bastion, which was originally known as Radiant Garden before it got destroyed once Ansem became obsessed with the Heartless. Only the castle actually remains, and it has become a cold, distant and calculating looking place. She does not remember anything about the world in the beginning of the game, as Sora questions her about it. Kairi is happy in Destiny Islands, but would not mind going to see it just because it was where she came from originally. When Sora reaches Hollow Bastion, he sees a flashback to Kairi’s past where an old woman, her grandmother, is telling her the story of how darkness came into the world. No other family or people are shown, nor does Kairi appear to be very interested in the story because she ends up running off while her grandmother is talking. It is the only flashback to her childhood that is shown at Hollow Bastion, and it happened to be in a library. There is no word of secret hideouts, friends or anything else that she has in Destiny Islands, though that is not to say that she did not enjoy her time there. It is never said that Kairi fully remembers her past at Hollow Bastion after she regains her heart in the place, but in the end, it does not even matter. Destiny Islands will always be the “true” home to Kairi, and even though she may have had nostalgia and appreciation from seeing her original home, she chooses to return to Destiny Islands in order to wait for Sora and Riku and to return. To wait for them to return to the memories they made together.
