Inferiority Complex

When you first glance at Inuyasha, he comes off as an arrogant, cocky and self-centered jerk. He appears to only do things for his own benefit and only care about himself. Inuyasha, however, does not really feel that way deep down in his heart. Inuyasha had a rough childhood because of his race. He was not a full demon, nor was he completely human, and therefore he could never find a place to fit in. Demons would abuse him, making fun of his human half, but humans could not accept him because of his demon half. As a result, Inuyasha became under the impression that if he ever lets his guard down, he may be killed. In other words, Inuyasha has developed a severe inferiority complex. He acts tough and talks big, but in reality he is hurting on the inside. He softens a little after meeting Kikyou, but after he believes he was betrayed once more, Inuyasha trusts no one. Of course, Kagome and his other friends begin to wear down his outer shell that he puts up to protect himself slowly, but surely. His tendency to be quick to anger, incredibly jealous and extreme arrogance are usually typical covers for his true emotions, and they linger majority of the time even after making bonds with his new friends. Being emotional is something Inuyasha considers “weak” and therefore tries to put on a strong front. Even though Inuyasha does not mean harm, he has a hard time apologizing or admitting he is wrong because he does not want to show any signs of being weak and/or emotional. As time goes on, Inuyasha begins to let his guard down more often as he is able to entrust his life to his friends, something he could never do before.

Protector

Though he tries to hide it, Inuyasha takes great pride in being able to protect the people he cares about and those in need. Even though his wish of becoming full demon stays the same throughout a good portion of his journey, his motives behind the wish change. At first he only wanted to gain power to protect himself, but now he wishes to be stronger in order to protect his friends. Inuyasha will do anything in order to make sure his friends, specifically Kagome and Kikyou, are safe. His will and fighting abilities increase even when the odds are against him if he simply hears the name “Kagome” or “Kikyou”, or if there is a chance one of his other allies will be injured if he cannot defeat his enemy. If he fails to protect one of them, he is not afraid to die for them. When Kagome is possessed by Tsubaki, he refuses to leave her side even if it costs him is own life because he could not save her in time. Part of the reason he hates transforming into a human so much is because he has to sit back and hide while his friends protect him if anything happens. Inuyasha does not like to feel helpless and watch people get hurt right in front of his eyes. He declines playing “hero” majority of the time if it will not gain the group jewel shards, but when it comes down to it, Inuyasha cannot leave someone in danger. Inuyasha is even willing to risk himself quite a few times to save his rival Kouga from danger, though he will not admit it after the task has been completed. Inuyasha truly values the life of others and is a kind person underneath his “bad boy” appearance. When he finds out that Kagome and the others are finally safe after he feared losing them all from danger he could not protect them from, he starts crying. The group is shocked, but his feelings for all of them have been there the whole time. Inuyasha truly cares about all of his friends and would not be able to live with himself if anything were to happen to them because he could not protect them.

Loveable Puppy

When Inuyasha does have his guard down, he has a completely different personality. He has tendencies to be very curious, such as with Kagome’s textbooks from school or other things from modern times. He does not pretend to know what it is or what it is used for, and thus his arrogance has dropped. His eyes light up and he tries to interact with what he does not know about, seemingly enjoying himself unless he accidentally breaks it and fears that Kagome will be angry with him. It is almost cute how ignorant he is of the things that Kagome brings back or he sees while visiting her in modern day. When the two of them end up in a photo booth, Inuyasha freaks out after it flashes and goes to attack it until she tells him to sit and he falls. His addiction and love for ramen also brings out a softer side for him, as he will do just about anything to get his hands on some. When he tastes it for the first time, he is enjoying it so much that he completely forgets they are eating while surrounded by corpses and skeletons. Inuyasha is also an idiot sometimes because he is easily fooled by tricks and spells. Not only does he fall for Shippou’s trick to keep him still once, but he also falls for the same thing again later by some child monkey demons. Inuyasha is easily deceived and is almost honest to a fault, but this is the side of him that his friends are really attracted to. When his guard is down, he is kind, gentle and very much like a loveable puppy that you want to squeeze.
