FOX FIRE
When they first meet, Inuyasha personally finds Shippou to be incredibly whiny, annoying and weak. He does not find his cocky attitude to be amusing, and his attempt at being cute fails to affect Inuyasha. On the other hand, Shippou things Inuyasha is too arrogant and rude, and therefore uses a simple spell that makes Inuyasha stuck under a rock. Though their opinion of each other generally stays the same, they manage to form a bond of friendship that they both refuse to acknowledge because of their pride. Inuyasha will still do whatever he can to make sure Shippou is safe, and even Shippou will try and stand up to powerful enemies for Inuyasha’s sake. In the heat of an argument between Inuyasha and Kagome, Shippou always takes Kagome’s side, which in turn makes Inuyasha angry because he thinks he is being ganged up on. It is usually Shippou who tries to defend Kagome’s feelings and tells Inuyasha to go bring her back to Feudal Times and/or apologize. Though Shippou obviously is doing it for Kagome’s sake, he wants Inuyasha to be happy as well, and since he believes Inuyasha loves Kagome, he probably thinks he is helping him as well. Shippou is usually whom Inuyasha takes his anger out on because he is so small and an easy target for him to punch on the head, but he usually gets in trouble because Shippou whines to Kagome about it. Inuyasha and Shippou kind of have a brother-like relationship, as the two of them make fun of each other, but look out for the other at the same time.
KAZANA
Miroku more or less becomes Inuyasha’s “best friend” on their journey together. At first, Inuyasha does not think very highly of him because of his perverted actions and attempts to make moves on Kagome, but as they get to know each other more, Inuyasha begins to rely on Miroku a lot. The two are the only “men” in the party, so I suppose it is only natural for them to become close. Miroku’s love for women and sneaky ways of getting money never really rubs off on Inuyasha, and he sometimes chastises him for it, but Inuyasha definitely trusts that Miroku has his back in battle. When Miroku believes he is at his limit with Kazana and is about to let himself be devoured by demons, Inuyasha rushes in and is really angry at Miroku for thinking he can just go and die like that. He does not come out and say that he does not want Miroku to die because he cares about his friend, but it is plainly obvious Inuyasha feels that way. Even Miroku smiles to himself knowing that Inuyasha came to rescue him because he cared about him. On the same token, Miroku tries to cover for Inuyasha’s tendency to be rash and jump into situations before he thinks about it because of his own concern for his friend. He usually tries to make Inuyasha think things through, even if he is brushed off. It is Miroku who forms seeds of doubt in Inuyasha’s mind about using the Shikon no Tama to become a full demon, as he forces Inuyasha to realize he may not maintain his same consciousness like when he accidentally transforms into a full demon on a few occasions on their journey. He just does not want Inuyasha rushing into something that he will regret and cannot undo. Though Miroku has his own bad tendencies of being perverted, I believe Inuyasha looks toward him for wisdom and “advice” of sorts.
HIRAIKOTSU
Inuyasha faces Sango in battle when Naraku tricks her in order to get her to kill Inuyasha. The group quickly realizes Naraku is manipulating her and Inuyasha sucks up his pride and they take care of her injuries. When Sango steals Tetsusaiga, Inuyasha does not actually get angry about it, as even he recognizes she only did it because Naraku threatened her brother in some fashion. Inuyasha is probably able to understand Sango because Naraku manipulated him and someone he loved into despair, and I believe that is why the two of them are able to be close without actually speaking to each other a lot. Though Sango may be able to understand the pain caused by Naraku, she does not agree with Inuyasha’s feelings for both Kagome and Kikyou, and therefore takes Kagome’s side during their arguments. As the only two girls, Sango and Kagome become very close, and she will not tolerate Inuyasha making Kagome feel bad in any sort of fashion. At the same time, Sango also enjoys making fun of Inuyasha’s obvious feelings for Kagome as well as his simple mindedness and tendencies to be honest almost to a fault. I believe Sango prizes her friendship with Inuyasha, even if the two never really converse on their own. Inuyasha respects her feelings for Kohaku, and therefore gives her strength to find a way to keep him alive and save him from Naraku’s grasp when she gives up. Sango becomes yet another one of Inuyasha’s prized companions, and he will do anything to make sure she is safe.
WHIRLWIND
Inuyasha and Kouga quickly become rivals over the heart of Kagome. Inuyasha cannot stand it when anyone tries to become too friendly with her or has obvious intentions of having her feelings, and therefore Kouga automatically drops to the bottom of the list of Inuyasha’s favorite people. Kouga is very straightforward about his intentions with Kagome, and speaks like she is already his. Inuyasha gets extremely angry when he acts like he knows her, and becomes violent in order to take it out. Kouga is only amused by the challenge, and accepts their ongoing duel as an opportunity to win Kagome’s affections. Kagome often has to sweet talk Kouga in order to get him to leave and prevent fighting between the two, as not only will they argue for hours, but they have tendencies to physically fight to settle their disputes as well. Inuyasha and Kouga are actually quite similar, as they both want things their way, they are both pretty cocky, and they both apparently have similar taste in women. Unfortunately their negative similarities make them clash, and they do not get along at all. Though Inuyasha is very angry when Kouga is around, he does not ever hesitate to aid the wolf demon when he is in danger. Of course he won’t admit he did it because he wanted to save him or anything like that, which causes Kouga never to thank him. Even though the two constantly fight whenever they see each other, I think that they probably would be able to fight side by side without worrying about the other not having their back. Kouga eventually gives up pursuing Kagome when he realizes that he will only be a bother to her and Inuyasha if he sticks around to fight Naraku, and he bids his farewell to her. Kouga never says anything to Inuyasha before he leaves, but he was probably respecting the fact Kikyou just died and did not want to bother him. Kouga most likely does care a little about Inuyasha, or at least has enough respect not to mess with him after something drastic like Kikyou’s death happened.
