Star-Crossed
Inuyasha meets Kikyou one night after she has trouble defeating a demon. She collapses in the rain, and he goes over to her in his human form. After examining her, he gets the idea to steal the Shikon no Tama in order to become a full demon. Much to his dismay, no matter how many times he tried to get close to the jewel, Kikyou would pin his clothing to a tree so he was unable to move. It irritated him even more that she would never kill him, like she was mocking him. Kikyou, however, felt that he was similar to her and therefore could not bring herself to kill him. Oddly enough, Kikyou begins to trust him, and the two begin to talk. He does not trust her motives at first, but begins to relax around her after time. Inuyasha then finds himself constantly being near her, watching her every move. Being with Kikyou made him feel appreciated and wanted, and it made him happy just to be by her side. Before Kikyou knew it, she was falling in love with him as well, and enjoyed knowing his eyes were always on her. Inuyasha is even willing to swallow his pride and become human to live with her, if that is what she truly wanted. The two were never happier in their lives. Unfortunately, Naraku made it so they believed one had betrayed the other, and the fatally wounded Kikyou seals Inuyasha to a tree. Their relationship does not stop there, however, as both are revived fifty years later. Kikyou is brought back to live driven on the hatred for Inuyasha she died with, but Inuyasha cannot help the feelings of love he still has for her once he finds out she did not really betray him. When he witnessed her brought back to life, he does not stop thinking about her for a single day. Even though Inuyasha now also has feelings for Kagome, he cannot let go of his love for Kikyou because of what happened between them in the past. Any word of Kikyou or sight of her Shinidamachuu sends him running to find her. Inuyasha partially blames himself for her death and suffering, as he believes their whole ordeal resulted because he could not trust her enough. He then makes a promise to himself that he will always protect her no matter what happens. Though Kikyou wishes for him to die with her, he has to refuse her request because Kagome is also important to him, and he needs to stay alive in order to protect her as well. Inuyasha and Kikyou can never go back to the way they once were, not only because of the tension of the past, but because her own reincarnation was taking her place in melting Inuyasha’s heart. Kikyou is jealous that Kagome is doing what she wanted to do when she was alive, but she eventually comes to accept that Kagome is more important to him than she is. Of course, that is not true, because Inuyasha equally prizes them both, but she believes Kagome is what Inuyasha needs to be happy now. Though it took quite some time, I believe her love for Inuyasha eventually allowed her to accept that if Kagome was what took to make him happy, she would respect that, no matter how hard it was on her. When Kikyou is dying in his arms, she is able to smile and laugh while crying because he was there with her during her last moments. The pain welled up within Inuyasha, and poured out in liquid form from his eyes. He kisses her, probably communicating all of his emotions to her with a single action. I believe at that moment she was able to rest in peace because she knew that the man she loved more than anything loved her to, and would always cherish her even if they could not be together. Even though she is dead, she will always live on within Inuyasha’s heart because she taught him kindness, trust and was his first love. The star-crossed lovers could not end up together, but the time that they did share permanently changed the both of them. Inuyasha will never forget Kikyou and his love for her.
Learning to Love Again
After believing he was betrayed by Kikyou, Inuyasha completely sealed himself off, especially to Kagome. Not only was he annoyed that she was the reincarnation of the woman that killed him, he did not get along with her either. At first, Kagome does not think very highly of Inuyasha because he seemed self-centered, arrogant and violent. As time went on, she realized that there was another part to him that he buried deep within himself. She began to trust him, and knew that he would come to her rescue if she were ever in danger. Likewise, Inuyasha begins to enjoy having her spirited personality around, and before he knows it, she becomes a very important person to him. Kagome somehow manages to soften his heart and eyes and allows him to open up to her and their other friends. Of course, with the way that their personalities clash, he would never admit that. Inuyasha and Kagome get into a TON of arguments because neither of them like to apologize or admit they are wrong, and they both get angry easily. Regardless of how many fights they get into, their bond stays as strong as ever because nothing could break the feelings they end up developing for each other. Though Inuyasha at first believes she is just like another Kikyou, he quickly realizes that Kagome is completely different from the woman he once loved. What was strange was that he found himself falling in love with her anyway. Her gentle nature relaxed him, and he knew she would always be at his side. At one point, Inuyasha worries about losing her and makes her go back to her own time “for good” because he does not want to see another woman die. He does not want to be the cause of another woman he loves dying. Kagome then realizes her own feelings for him to be love, and desperately fights to get back to him. Inuyasha then accepts that Kagome just wants to be near him. It becomes evident that Inuyasha becomes a lot more powerful and willful just by hearing Kagome’s name, as his power seems to increase when he thinks he smells her scent after thinking it impossible for her to return. Kagome obviously means a lot to him, and his spirit is revived whenever she becomes part of the picture. Inuyasha does not really seem to understand why Kagome gets so upset every time he runs off to find Kikyou or does something for Kikyou, and then he in turn gets angry over it even though he gets jealous whenever Kouga shows up for Kagome’s affections. She tries hard to accept that Inuyasha still has feelings for Kikyou, but that hurts her because she loves Inuyasha so much. She tries to make him decide between her and Kikyou, and when he says he likes both of them, she does not know what to do. Eventually, Kagome realizes there is nothing she can do, and even if Inuyasha does have feelings for her, he will always think of Kikyou as well. Naraku tries to manipulate her jealousy into a seed of doubt, but Kagome knows that it is not because she hates Kikyou, but because she loves Inuyasha. She is able to make the mature decision and say that because she loves him, she will stay by his side and do what she can. After falling into a trap when he thinks Kikyou is dead, Inuyasha realizes that his feelings for the dead miko almost cost him Kagome’s life. He then makes the decision that he has to protect her over running off to find Kikyou because Kagome is alive. She does not believe him, and admits she gets huffy when he runs off to her, but it is only natural. After Kikyou’s death, Inuyasha and Kagome are busy fighting Naraku, so their relationship gets put on hold. When the Shikon no Tama traps Kagome, her love and trust for Inuyasha pull her through and they are able to destroy both the jewel and Naraku. Kagome ends up back in her own time for a while, but is able to return to Feudal Times. She makes the decision to stay in Feudal Times with Inuyasha and it is implied that they get married by Souta and Kagome calling Sesshoumaru her brother. Inuyasha and Kagome’s love for one another is strong enough to cross time and allows them to live for tomorrow.
