Hanyou Inuyasha

NAME: Inuyasha
AGE: 15 (in human years)
RACE: Hanyou (half-demon)
HAIR: Silver
EYES: Yellow/gold
FAMILY: Sesshoumaru (half brother)
OCCUPATIONAL ABILITY: Warrior
“A half-demon, born of a great demon father and a gentle human mother. After a battle with his older brother, who boasts profound power, he obtained a fang left by his father. Throughout the journey with his new companions, his spirit has grown stronger and true power has been gained. Pursuing the root of demonic powers, they gather the strength to destroy it.” – InuYasha Profiles

“A half-demon born of a demon father so massive its body seemed to touch the sky. His father possessed unfathomable demon power and governed the Western Country. His human mother was graceful and beautiful. Inuyasha has a sturdy body and sharp claws, inherited from his dog-demon father. He also possesses a human-like spirit received from his gentle mother, with which he protects his friends.” – InuYasha Profiles

APPEARANCE: Dog ears, lots of silver hair, sharp claws.
ATTIRE: Robe of the Fire-Rat – Woven from the hair of a Fire-Rat and serves as tough armor as well as has the ability to regenerate itself.
VITALITY: His body is able to withstand pressure that would crush a normal human. Also, when he wears the Fire-Rat robe, he barely feels attacks up to a certain degree.
OLFACTION: Sharp sense of smell provides the ability to distinguish friend from foe. However, when faced with an overpoweringly strong odor, he falls unconscious.
PHYSICAL STRENGTH: Although his body looks like that of a normal human, he possesses incredible strength. He can easily lift large rocks, even those larger than himself.
INSTANTANEOUS POWER: Jumping ability that allows him to scale the highest cliff in a single bound. He can carry his friends on his back and leap over and beyond forests and wilderness.

New Moon

As Inuyasha is a hanyou, he is part human. One day a month, Inuyasha transforms into a human form. That day happens to be the night of the new moon. The fact that Inuyasha has a specific day to transform has to be kept a secret from Naraku, because Inuyasha loses his strength and could easily be killed if he found out. Therefore, on nights of the new moon, Inuyasha and his friends are forced to hide and hope that no one finds out his secret. Kagura happens to find out his secret at one point, but she pretends not to have seen anything and does not tell Naraku.

Being in this form makes Inuyasha incredibly impatient and angry. He hates losing his strength and power to protect his friends, and does not like the idea of hiding while he is being protected. Inuyasha takes great pride in being able to protect his friends, so transforming into a human is a strong blow to his ego. When he is a human, he suffers quietly from the angst that never disappears as a result of his past. He claims it is harder to bear the uneasiness he feels when he is human, especially because he has no way to protect himself. Always believing he has to be on guard, Inuyasha probably feels naked, as he thinks that if he lets his guard down, he might get killed. As a result, Inuyasha tries to push everyone, including Kagome, away when they first find out he transforms into a human.

APPEARANCE: His claws, ears and fangs, which he inherited from his father, disappear. His silver hair changes black at sunset.
VITALITY: Becomes human level. Inuyasha loses his physical strength, and he could die if he is seriously hurt when in human form.
PHYSICAL STRENGTH: Drastically reduced. He loses the potential energy that his demon body has and weakens. As his striking advantage wanes, Inuyasha succumbs to his enemies’ counterattacks.

Inuyasha tries to wait patiently as night draws on, for as soon as the sun begins to rise the next morning, he regains his hanyou form and everything that comes with it.

Demon Blood

On the other hand, Inuyasha has the potential to turn into a full demon as well. When he is not in possession of Tetsusaiga with its sealing power, as well as when his life as in danger, he changes into his full demon form. Unlike his human form, Inuyasha does not carry over his hanyou consciousness when he transforms into a demon. The demon blood within him takes over, and he turns into a raging, bloodthirsty monster. He has no sense of perception, can barely do anything but growl, and has even turned on Kagome and his other friends. Inuyasha only has one purpose in his mind while in this form, and that is to destroy everything near him.

Inuyasha is well aware of what happens when he transforms into a full demon, and therefore while he has some consciousness, he has told Kagome not to come near him because of what he may do to her. I believe that the reason why he is so set on destruction in this form is to make up for the weakness he feels while he is human. While feeling completely inferior as a human, Inuyasha has the power and the will to be powerful and destructive as a demon. Inuyasha is at a balance while being a hanyou, but still wishes to do away with the weaknesses of being half human. Despite knowing that he barely has any consciousness while he is a full demon, Inuyasha still continues to wish to use the jewel to not be a hanyou any longer. As his journey continues, he begins to doubt his wish a little due to Miroku’s words reminding him what would happen, but he brushes it off by saying he will always be himself no matter what happens. Even so, in the second movie, Inuyasha becomes a full demon because that still is his deepest and darkest desire. His friends watch helplessly, but Kagome faces him straight on and kisses him, saying she likes him just the way he is. The spell is broken and Inuyasha tells her that he will stay a hanyou a little longer just for her. Though Inuyasha believed all he wanted was to become a full demon, with the forging of bonds with his friends and his love for Kagome, his mind is being swayed away from the monster that lies within his heart.

APPEARANCE: Dog-demon features just like his brother Sesshoumaru (marks on his face). Shadows as red as blood, his eye color is that of his father.
VITALITY: Defense ability and resistance ability are upgraded and powerful poisons are nullified. Injuries suffered before changing will heal instantly.
INSTANTANEOUS POWER & PHYSICAL STRENGTH: A drastic elevation from his hanyou form. His speed and attack ability increase dramatically. The shackles of his human heart come off, demon bloodthirstiness appears, and all hesitation ceases.

Whenever Inuyasha becomes a full demon, an outside force has to bring him back to his senses. Kagome is normally able to do that, but there may be a time where it will be more difficult for him to change back…

Doggy traits

Inuyasha is half dog-demon, and therefore has some traits similar to that of a dog. Appearance wise, he most noticeably has his ears that resemble those of a dog. Rumiko explains that his ears feel like five uncooked Chinese dumpling shells on top of each other (though I am not quite sure exactly what that feels like either, I'm assuming they are probably firm, but still sort of soft). People who are unfamiliar with demons seem to have a strong urge to touch his ears, as Kagome and her mother exhibit. Whenever he is listening carefully or someone says something that slightly irritates him, his ears twitch a little, just like they would for a dog. Though not displayed well in the anime adaptation, Inuyasha’s nose is also supposed to resemble that of a dog, as Rumiko claims that it is always damp but dries out when he catches a cold. Inuyasha also has fangs, which could theoretically be associated with a demon, but are another physical trait of a dog.

Though Inuyasha gets angry any time someone makes a comment on how he acts more like a dog than a human, it is slightly true. He has tendencies to sit in a strange fashion (see the picture to the upper right) where both his feet and hands are touching the ground. Not only does he already have a similar appearance to a dog as it is, sitting like one just makes him look like a dog more. Inuyasha is also known to get down on all fours and start sniffing the ground in order to catch a scent of something or someone that he is looking for. He seems not to understand that this action is a perfect example of him acting like a dog, as right after he yells about not acting like one, he goes and sniffs the ground to try and find Kouga.
