The Legend
There once was a powerful miko named Kikyou living in Feudal Japan. Her strong spiritual powers were well known across the land, and as a result, she was asked to take over the job of protecting and purifying the Shikon no Tama – a mysterious jewel with the ability to grant a wish to any user, specifically demons. The village of demon slayers had previously guarded it from falling into the wrong hands, but Kikyou was the only one strong enough to purify it. She took her job seriously, and never let anyone touch the jewel. One day, the hanyou Inuyasha decided that he wanted the Shikon no Tama in order to become a full-fledged demon. His attempts to steal the jewel, however, miserably failed, as Kikyou easily pinned him to a tree. She did not take his life no matter how many times he tried to steal the jewel. Kikyou felt a similarity between herself and Inuyasha, and therefore could not bring herself to kill him. Eventually, the two ended up talking and a strong bond was formed between them. Inuyasha always stayed near Kikyou, watching her every move. He did not care about the Shikon no Tama any longer, he was happy as long as he could be by her side. Unfortunately, the more Kikyou fell in love with Inuyasha, her own spiritual powers decreased, and she could no longer sense or prevent certain demons from coming into the area. She was tending to a wounded bandit named Onigumo in a cave, as he was unable to move himself. The man held base desires for Kikyou within him, and allowed himself to be devoured by demons in order to get a new body to make her his woman. In the mean time, Inuyasha and Kikyou made a promise that she would give him the Shikon no Tama so he could wish to be a human. That way, she would be freed from her duties of protecting the jewel, and Inuyasha would live with her as a human. The next morning, Kikyou hurried to their promised spot because she was late, only to discover Inuyasha was not there yet either. Suddenly, Inuyasha came out of nowhere and attacked her from behind. Kikyou tried to process what was going on and grab the jewel, but he stepped on her hand and took it. He told her that he never had any intention of becoming human to live with her, and he only wanted the jewel. The fatally wounded miko was devastated and filled with rage. The person who appeared to be Inuyasha put the Shikon no Tama back into its shrine, and then changed his form to Kikyou. The real Inuyasha then made his way to where he had promised to meet Kikyou. The mysterious person in the form of Kikyou then shot arrows at him, telling him that she had never planned on giving him the jewel and was going to kill him right there and then. Infuriated, Inuyasha attacked the village in search of the Shikon no Tama. Once in his hands, he easily dodged all the villagers’ attempts to stop him, and was almost home free. He then heard a betrayed voice scream his name and shortly after felt the impact of an arrow into his chest. Inuyasha dropped the jewel as a result of the impact, and then was pinned to the tree behind him. He saw his wounded lover, and wondered why she betrayed him as his vision began to blur. Inuyasha then could no longer keep his eyes open. Kikyou slowly made her way to the Shikon no Tama, a large trail of blood following behind her. The villagers and her sister begged her to be taken care of, but she knew she would not survive. She instructed her sister to take the Shikon no Tama and burn it with her body so that it would never fall into the wrong hands again, and followed Inuyasha in death with a broken heart.
Journey Across Time
In modern day Japan, Higurashi Kagome is celebrating her fifteenth birthday. She hurries off to school, only to find her brother worrying about their cat, Buyo, wandering into part of the Higurashi shrine that holds a well. She quickly goes to prove that her brother is being a coward not getting the cat himself, when suddenly a bunch of arms reach out of the well and grab her. Before she knows it, she finds herself being sucked into a different dimension while being held by a giant centipede woman. Kagome instinctively goes to push the demon away, but ends up blasting her with energy from her hand. Surprised, but relieved, Kagome finds herself at the bottom of the well without the company of the strange demon. Thinking she was only dreaming, she yells for Souta to get help. When he does not respond, she manages to climb up the well using vines. Kagome then realizes she is no longer inside the Higurashi shrine or in earshot of her brother. In fact, she had ended up in Feudal Japan, fifty years after the incident between Inuyasha and Kikyou. She wanders around the forest until she recognizes the tall tree that stands within the shrine. Rushing to it, she does not find her home, but a boy pinned to the tree by an arrow. Slowly approaching him, she casually tries to talk to him. Getting no response, she gets closer and notices he has dog ears. After satisfying her urge to touch them, she is attacked by a group of villagers who drag her back to their village. An old woman approaches her and Kagome convinces her that she is not a demon, and is just a regular girl. After being freed, Kagome wonders if she will ever be able to return home. As if being transported to a different time was not enough, the strange centipede attacks the village and demands for Kagome to give her the Shikon no Tama. Kagome obviously believes she has no such thing, and she runs to the forest where she met the boy pinned to the tree in order to get the demon away from the village. When she calls for help, Inuyasha awakens. He smells the blood of the woman who killed him, and awaits her arrival in front of him. The centipede demon lunges at Kagome, forcing her to fly forward towards Inuyasha. He mocks her for looking stupid, and refers to her as Kikyou. Kagome gets angry after being accused of being someone else, and Inuyasha realizes that she really is not Kikyou, even if they have a similar smell. The centipede returns and attacks Kagome again, but the villagers arrive in time to save her. After blasting the demon again with power from her own hand, a small section of her body begins to glow. Seeing it, the demon bites through her flesh and throws Kagome up into the air. As she falls, she notices a small jewel fall with her – the Shikon no Tama. Inuyasha yells for her to hurry and pick it up, but the centipede wraps Kagome into the tree against Inuyasha. After swallowing the jewel and changing form, Inuyasha asks Kagome to pull out the arrow that was holding him against the tree. She is told not to, but takes her chances and does it anyway because she does not want to be eaten by the centipede demon. Inuyasha resonates like a heartbeat, and then destroys the demon. Shortly after, he demands for Kagome to hand over the jewel, and she tries to escape by running away. Kikyou’s sister, Kaede, mumbles a spell and prayer beads form around Inuyasha’s neck. After she tells Kagome to say a word to subdue him, she shouts “sit!” and he is slammed into the ground.
Inuyasha hangs around the village and waits for his chance to steal the jewel. Kaede then tells them that Kagome must be the reincarnation of Kikyou; not only because of her similar appearance, but the Shikon no Tama was found within her body. After an ordeal with a crow demon that swallows the jewel, Kagome fires an arrow with its leg attached in order to make sure it hits. Unfortunately, the arrow hit a little too well, and the Shikon no Tama cracked into hundreds of pieces. Not only that, but they scattered all over the land. Inuyasha and Kagome must now work together to gather the jewel shards, because even a little fragment could cause a demon to become very powerful and result in trouble. A demon calling himself Naraku appears as an antagonist to Inuyasha and Kagome, collecting the shards and causing tragedy and destruction. On top of that, Naraku is the very person who ensnared Inuyasha and Kikyou fifty years ago. What will Inuyasha do, knowing the person that ruined his life and caused the death of his lover is still alive?
