Demon Father, Human Mother
Inuyasha’s father was a powerful full demon lord that was known very well across the land. Though he had Sesshoumaru with a female dog demon, he was in love with a human named Izayoi. After fighting with Ryukotsusei, he is terribly injured, but has no time to tend to his injuries because he knows he must hurry to Izayoi’s side. She is due to give birth to his second son and needs to be near her. Izayoi is inside of a castle that is heavily guarded, and by the time he reaches her, a man named Takemaru had already killed her because of her love for a demon. Inuyasha’s father uses Tenseiga to bring her back to life, and then gives her the robe of the Fire-Rat for protection against the flames because Takemaru ordered for the castle to be set aflame. He then tells Izayoi to escape with their newborn baby (whom he calls Inuyasha) while he fights Takemaru. Izayoi makes it away from the castle safely, and watches it collapse with her lover still inside. Not only was Izaoyi’s relationship with a demon frowned upon; their son would grow up having a hard time as a result of it. He would not be accepted by demons, nor would he be by humans. Though Izayoi could not help loving Inuyasha’s father, her child would suffer greatly because he was a hanyou, representing the union between a demon and a human.
Brother Rivalry
Sesshoumaru is Inuyasha’s half brother. There is no brotherly love between these two siblings, however, as jealousy surges from one end. The two share the same father, but have different mothers. While Inuyasha’s mother was a human woman, Sesshoumaru’s was a full demon, making him a full demon as well. Sesshoumaru hates humans, and has absolutely no respect for his younger half brother because he is part human. As if his disdain was not enough, their father left behind two swords for his sons to inherit. One was Tetsusaiga, with the power to kill one hundred demons with one swoop, and the other was Tenseiga, which had the power to revive one hundred humans with one swing. Though already quite powerful, Sesshoumaru wished to be the owner of Tetsusaiga. Unfortunately for Sesshoumaru, their father left Tetsusaiga to Inuyasha and Tenseiga to him. Sesshoumaru becomes incredibly annoyed and despises the fact that his worthless half brother would be the owner of Tetsusaiga over himself. Before he was aware of that fact, he pursued the location where Tetsusaiga was supposed to reside. He had no idea where their father had hidden his grave, until Inuyasha was freed of Kikyou’s spell. The grave could only be located using Inuyasha’s eye, and therefore Sesshoumaru just reached in and took it out. Not only that, but he also used an illusion of Inuyasha’s mother to get to him, which clearly shows that Sesshoumaru does not care about Inuyasha’s feelings or wishes once so ever. Inuyasha on the other hand just does not like Sesshoumaru because he is arrogant and cruel to him, but he would not wish for his half brother to die. Inuyasha actually becomes concerned when there is a possibility that Sesshoumaru was killed various times, showing that he does not completely hate his elder brother. Sesshoumaru mocks the fact that he knows Inuyasha is not willing to kill him during a fight the two have, but that only makes Inuyasha angry rather than actually wanting to kill him. Whether or not Sesshoumaru is starting to like Inuyasha even a little in later manga chapters is still up in the air. He is beginning to appreciate Tenseiga more than he originally did now that he has a human life to value, but I believe that he is still angry about not getting the sword he wanted. He does spend a good portion of the beginning of the series trying to steal Tetsusaiga from Inuyasha; I would imagine that determination and desire would be hard to get rid of. Sesshoumaru and Inuyasha have argued over trivial things before, such as who will be the one to fight and kill Naraku and who is stronger out of the two of them, etcetera. During times like those, it becomes a little more evident that the two are brothers. Their father told Sesshoumaru to protect Inuyasha before he died, and therefore I believe that in the end he probably will do something of the sort, though may not admit it. Rin has melted Sesshoumaru’s icy exterior, so if he can care for her, he may grow to care about Inuyasha…maybe.
