Making do with Claws

Before Inuyasha obtained Tetsusaiga, he had to defend himself with his bare hands because he had no other weapon. Not that his very sharp claws do not suffice for a sword, as he proves by cutting through demons numerous times. Though he does not have too many tricks up his sleeve when it comes to fighting without his sword, he manages to scrape by with a few attacks. Inuyasha not only makes good use of his fists and claws, but his own blood as well.

DIRECT STRIKING: When Inuyasha does not actually mean to kill, he is often seen just punching his opponent in order to avoid bloodshed. It is a skill that is useful against weak enemies as well as those with a high defensive ability. If his opponent has tough skin, he will strike with his claws.

SANKONTESSOU (IRON-REAVER SOUL STEALER): Swinging both arms in wide circles, he charges into enemy territory. His claws, as sharp as swords, can reduce regular demons into bits and pieces. The onslaught is continuous with his nimble, speedy movement and wide area of attack. This technique is useful when he is surrounded on all sides by a large number of enemies. HIJINKESSOU (BLADES OF BLOOD): Using demonic power, he can harden his own blood and like a bladed projectile, throw it at his enemies. It is a surprise attack that catches enemies off guard who think he is weakened from battle. It is particularly useful when an enemy’s movements are too fast for a direct attack or when enemies employ ranged attacks. Inuyasha tends to use this attack more often than Sankontessou after getting Tetsuseiga.

Legendary Sword

Tetsusaiga is one of two legendary swords left behind by Inuyasha’s father. Sesshoumaru had his eyes on Tetsusaiga because it is said to be able to kill one hundred demons with one swing of the sword. The sword’s blade is made from a fang of Inuyasha’s father, and the guard is made of his father’s fur. At first, the sword only seemed to be a nimble and ragged piece of junk, but once Inuyasha uses it in order to protect Kagome, the blade grows to its true size and is filled with demon power beyond a normal sword. Tetsusaiga will lose its power if its owner lets go of it or if the power is driven out. It was given to Inuyasha because the sword was originally created in order to protect Inuyasha’s mother, a human, and Inuyasha wishes to protect Kagome. Sesshoumaru did not have the desire to protect any humans at the time, and therefore it rejected him as an owner. Inuyasha relies heavily on Tetsusaiga’s power once he receives it, and always keeps the sword with him no matter what he is doing.

KAZE NO KIZU (WIND SCAR): A mighty Tetsusaiga technique that is said to have leveled on hundred enemies in a single stroke. Sent out a shock wave by slicing through the boundary between two kinds of demonic power. Inuyasha would have to search for it originally, but when Tetsusaiga is modified, a wind scar constantly surrounds it, and therefore he can use it whenever he wants.

BAKURYUUHA (BACKLASH WAVE): Tetsusaiga’s greatest mystery is said to be the ability to reflect back and enemy’s demon power with Kaze no Kizu. Enemies hit with their own demon power combined with the superior demon power of Inuyasha are crushed into pieces and turned into dust.

KONGOUSOUHA (ADAMANT BARRAGE): As a result of choosing to protect his friends rather than making Tetsusaiga stronger, he was rewarded with the power of diamond shards from Housenki. The shards combine with Kaze no Kizu to make this new and powerful attack.

Tetsusaiga is also able to change forms throughout Inuyasha’s journey. When it is Red Tetsusaiga, it is able to create energy that has the ability to break down barriers created by demons. Dragon-Scaled Tetsusaiga grants Inuyasha the ability to suck up the energy of his enemies. Tetsusaiga has also become black after its Dragon-Scaled form absorbed Tenseiga's Meidou Zangetsuha.
